The Facts of Life

• The heartbeat begins three weeks after conception.

• Arms begin to form at about three weeks, fingers and toes from six weeks.

• Brain waves are measurable as early as seven weeks.

• Baby makes spontaneous movements at about eight weeks. Mother does not usually feel baby moving until about sixteen weeks.

• At nine weeks, in response to a touch on the sole of the foot, baby can curl toes or bend hips and knees to move away from the object.

• At twelve weeks baby is fully formed, with facial features, limbs and digits, with all organs functioning.
• At eighteen weeks baby can produce complex facial expressions and even smile.
